Adaptation Support Tool 2.0

Adaptation Support Tool 2.0

Documentation

This guide will explain the use of the Adaptation Support Tool 2.0 going through the initial setup and configuration step by step.

First, read, discuss and accept the disclaimer and copyrights. All participants have to understand and agree that the results of the AST are merely indicative and cannot be used for final design and decision making. After accepting the disclaimer and copyrights we can start using the tool.

To begin using the AST, select Start a new project or, in case you already have a project select Open existing project.

Map manipulation

The mapview can be changed with several buttons that are divided with regards to their functions into: map controls, drawing controls and layers and legend.

Map controls

Drawing controls

Layers and legend

Layers

When this button is selected, several layers can be chosen to be shown in the map, similar to the layers provided below.

Legend

When the 'legend'-button is selected the legend of the active layers can be visualized, as shown in the image below.

Set up

Search for the area where you want to make the project after accepting both the disclaimer and copyrights, and starting the project.

The tool will pan and zoom into the selected location. Additionally, draw an area to indicate the project area:

Once the area is drawn, a NEXT button will appear to continue with the project area setup.

Press "NEXT" to continue and fill out all the parameters of the project area. Notice that you will not be able to go to the next step until you have filled out all the parameters.

Once all the parameters of the project area have been filled, press DONE to continue. Thereafter, draw the (spatial) outline of the measure into the map. This can be a polygon, a line or a point measure.

After drawing the outline of the measure, you can give it a name in “Area name” and click CHOOSE MEASURE to choose the measure that you wish to apply to the area.

After selecting CHOOSE MEASURE, a list with all the measures will appear, as shown in the image below:

The listed measures are ranked according to their effectiveness based on the properties of the project area and the climate adaptation goal within the project area.

The icons as listed below indicate to what climate effect the measures contribute.

In order to have more information on a certain measure, click LEARN MORE. When clicking LEARN MORE, both the effect on climate change and a short description plus image will be shown.

Select CHOOSE if you want to use the measure in your project. A screen to choose the measure depth, its inflow area as well as its radius and width will appear next. Notice that depending on the kind of measure (polygon, linear or point) some of those options will not appear.

The values for depth, inflow area, width and radius are default values typical for the chosen measure. Please be aware that the "Measure depth" refers to the depth of the layer of water that can be stored in the facility and not the depth of the actual measure itself.

Once those parameters are completed, press DONE. The measure will appear in the map, and it can be deactivated any time by clicking on the red toggles.

Scenario metrics

On the right side of the map, the results of applied measures are visualized. These are divided into results with regards to climate adaptation, water quality and costs.

The results can be visualized both graphically as well as numerically.

Saving and exporting results

In order to save and export a project, please click on the menu at the upper left corner of the screen.

Once this button is selected, a menu will be showing options to save or export the project, to see project settings, but also opening a new project.

  • To save a project click on the tab “Save project”. The project will be saved in the default download folder of the browser. This can be on the local machine or an attached network drive. In other words, not in the cloud.
  • To export a project, press on the tab “Export project”. The options of exporting the project in a CSV (Comma Separated File) and GEOJSON formats will be provided.

Project settings

Project settings can be easily accessed by clicking in the upper right button on the screen.

It is possible to adjust the parameters of the project within the settings of the project area.

The adaptation targets can be set in the PROJECT TARGET tab. Here desired adaptation targets (KPI's) for the project area can be set and the relevant (KPI's) to be shown in the Results tab can be selected. The project targets are divided into the same indicators as the ones in the results (climate, water quality and cost).
